We have been reliably informed that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reduction in the cost of JAMB UTME, NECO SSCE and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) forms. According to our source, the reduction will take effect from January 2019 with the cost of JAMB UTME Form is now N3,500 instead of N5,000 while NECO will now cost N9,850, instead of N11,350.
This information was made public by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, which was on Wednesday, 28th November, 2018 during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.
According to the minister, these examination bodies are not meant to be revenue generating bodies, they are only permitted to cover costs and operating expenses of conducting the exams.
The minister noted that the obvious increase in the amount being remitted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB from less than N60m in 2010 to 2016 to 15 Billion naira in 2017 to 2018 is an indication that the fees being charged could be reduced.
In his announcement, Adamu Adamu stated that Muhammadu Buhari directed the Ministry to look into the reduction following the significant improvement in revenues being remitted to the Treasury by the Education Agencies.
