COEASU Strike Update: Education Minister To Meet Union Leaders 17 July, 2014

We are all aware that the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP has been called a few days ago and all the Polytechnic Students are expected to return to school before 15th July, 2014.
But what about Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) Strike? When will they call off their strike? Or do they need to sack their minister and replace it with a new one that will comply with the current administration? Do they have their own Minister? Do Universities have their own Minister? Or is it the same as the new appointed minister of Education, Mallam Shekarau (the name reminds me of the head of the dreaded islam insurgent group, Boko Haram. 😀 )
Well, we have semi good news for you, read on…

According to information, intermission is on the way for College of Education students as the industrial action embarked upon by their lecturers will be called off in the nearest future.

From the statement made by the General Secretary of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Nuhu Ogirima, who said that the new Minister for Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau is set to meet with the union leaders on Thursday, 17th July in view of resolving the crisis rocking the tertiary institutions.

Shekarau said and I quote:

“We are very much willing to end the strike. But until we hear from the Minister on Thursday, the strike continues. We do want a situation where our people will be unnecessarily victimized. As we speak, we have not been paid salaries for four months now”

The New Minister of Education, Mallam Shekarau had met with the COEASU leaders last week to discuss the grievances of the lecturers and the meeting was described as successful with the minister promising to get back to the lecturers come Thursday, 17th July, 2014 to relay the government’s position on the issue.

Nuhu Ogirima assured the College of Education students that the outcome will be positive and beneficial to all involved and said he was satisfied with the new minister’s commitment to improving the education sector in Nigeria.

Why are we positive that the COEASU strike will be called off soon? Well the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) suspended their strike over the weekend after similar talks with the new minister.

College of Education students are all eager to know the outcome of the meeting, and we will do well to update you on the outcome.
Note: Forget all the funny questions above, we only have one Minister of Education in Nigeria. Or Perhaps we have different ministers for Universities, Polytechnics and College of Education?
