ASUP STRIKE 2014 Update: The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday, 18th March, 2014, criticised the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike in his negotiation with the striking members the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU).

The NLC in a statement signed by its President, Abdulwaheed Omar in Abuja, noted that recent breakdown of talks between Wike and the leadership of the unions over the full implementation of the 2009 agreement it signed with the federal government, is at best irresponsible on the part of the minister who it said took a hardline position and refused to move any inch in the negotiations to allow for mutual consensus.

Abdulwaheed Omar, in the statement called on the government to as a matter of urgency end further suffering of students in the affected polytechnics and colleges of education by bringing to an end the protracted strike which the union embarked on since October, 2013 and December, 2013 respectively.
